A principios del siglo XVI Japón comenzó a tener contacto con los europeos, principalmente con los portugueses en sus inicios. Este contacto inicio un intercambio económico y cultural. Con este intercambio se introdujo el cristianismo a Japón con los viajes de misioneros jesuitas portugueses al mismo, los misioneros viajaban con africanos esclavos. A society of people live in an enclosed, automated space, with nearly every surface a video screen with personalized entertainment and frequent advertising. They earn their living by riding on stationary bikes to generate power in exchange for «merits», a form of currency used to buy food, goods, virtual items for their doppel, and for entertainment. The society shuns overweight people, who are tasked with menial, janitorial jobs and subjected to humiliation via a game show. The island remained under the United Stated zone of influence for the next 6 decades, during this period the island was occupied in 1906-1909 and constantly intervene in its internal affair.
